Magic Mushrooms: History and Science

What magic mushrooms are, where they grow, why they bruise blue and where the stories around them come from. Each guide is dated and sourced, and says what is still unknown.

Start with what magic mushrooms are: the plain-English guide covers the basics and links to everything else here. From there the topic splits two ways. The science articles explain why the mushrooms bruise blue, where they have been recorded growing in Ontario, and how Albert Hofmann’s team at Sandoz isolated psilocybin in 1958.

The history articles follow the story from Mesoamerica to today: María Sabina and the Mazatec community of Huautla, the 1957 Life magazine article and what it cost the town, how magic mushrooms became illegal in Canada, and twelve stories from Toronto’s Yorkville and Rochdale years. Two articles test popular theories against the evidence: the stoned ape theory and the idea that Santa Claus comes from the fly agaric.

Each article dates its sources and separates what is established from what is only told. None of them is a guide to finding, identifying or taking mushrooms.
