SPECIES ATLAS · PSILOCYBE

Psilocybe fuscofulva

Named by Peck, 1887

Psilocybin record: not detected (two modern analyses; no positive report found)

A history of a name and a chemistry record, not an identification guide. No name, picture or description can show that a wild mushroom is safe, and poisonous mushrooms are mistaken for magic mushrooms. If someone may have eaten a wild mushroom, call a poison centre without waiting for symptoms: 1-844-POISON-X in most of Canada, 1-800-463-5060 in Quebec. Call 911 if they’re unconscious, not breathing or having a seizure.

How it was named.

Charles Peck described Psilocybe fuscofulva in 1887 in the Bulletin of the New York State Museum of Natural History 1(2): 7. The species was long called P. atrobrunnea; in 2015 Borovička and co-authors judged that name dubious and adopted Peck's name, the oldest available.

Named
Peck, 1887
Other names in the records
Psilocybe atrobrunnea auct. (misapplied name, per Borovička et al. 2015 and Gotvaldová et al. 2022), Psilocybe turficola nom. inval. (per Gotvaldová et al. 2022)
Type specimen
New York, USA (Index Fungorum: Peck s.n.; Borovička et al. 2015 studied the holotype, NYS 1310). (Index Fungorum record, Psilocybe fuscofulva; pin = Wikidata coordinates (Q1384))
The pin marks the type locality at the level of detail the record gives: one historical collection, not a range or a place to look. Land outlines: Natural Earth.

The psilocybin record.

Every analysis we could verify, oldest first, including results that found nothing. No amounts are given: they vary between collections and this is not a potency guide.

  1. 2015

Not detected Neither psilocybin nor psilocin detected (as P. atrobrunnea), including in mycelium grown on tryptamine- or tryptophan-amended media

    Method: GC-MS. Borovička et al. 2015, Persoonia 34: 1-9 (full text PMC4510267)

  2. 2022

Not detected No psilocybin, psilocin or related tryptamines detected in six fruiting bodies from three collections

Method: UHPLC-MS/MS. Gotvaldová et al. 2022, Int. J. Mol. Sci. 23: 14068 (full text PMC9693126)

What the record doesn’t show: This record exists because of negative results: no source found reports psilocybin in this species, and a 2026 genome preprint found no psilocybin genes.

Records on file.

GBIF, the global biodiversity database, held 138 occurrence records under this name, 15 of them from Canada, when we checked on October 25, 2026. GBIF lists 15 occurrence records from Canada under this name (checked 2026-10-25); the records are not verified identifications. Records include unverified observations and old misidentifications, so counts show where people have recorded the name, not where it grows.
