GLOSSARY · DMT AND AYAHUASCA

Changa

A street name, recorded by drug-information agencies, for a smoking blend that contains DMT. Its contents vary, so the name says nothing reliable about what is in it, and it does not change the law.

Changa is a street name for a smoking blend that contains DMT. It is a different product from DMT on its own, and a person told that something is “changa” has no reliable way of knowing what else is in it. We do not describe its ingredients.

The word appears in drug-agency lists of DMT’s other names. The Australian Alcohol and Drug Foundation lists it beside Dimitri, Deems, the spirit molecule, fantasia, the glory and the sacrament. In a study of 3,778 DMT experiences posted to an online forum between 2009 and 2018, 165 reports (4.4%) mentioned changa (Lawrence et al., 2022). That was a self-selected sample of posts, not a survey of users, so it says little about how common the blend is.

The name does not change the legal position in Canada. The Schedule III entry covers N,N-dimethyltryptamine “and any salt thereof”, and section 2(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act extends a listing to anything that contains the substance. Slang is also no guide to contents in general: drug-checking services regularly find that samples are not what people expected. This is general information, not legal advice.
