The newest papers and preprints on N,N-DMT, ayahuasca and 5-MeO-DMT. They come from Europe PMC, a free database of the life-science literature run by the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI), which brings together PubMed, PubMed Central and the main preprint servers. This list refreshes every day.
A new paper is one piece of evidence, not settled science. Single studies are often small, early or done in animals or cells; preprints haven’t been peer reviewed at all; and later work can confirm, change or overturn a result. We list papers for education and don’t summarise, rate or endorse any of them. How this list is made.
- The search. Every day we ask Europe PMC for records first published in the last two years whose title, abstract or keywords contain “dimethyltryptamine”, “ayahuasca”, “5-MeO-DMT” or “5-methoxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine”, from PubMed/MEDLINE, PubMed Central and preprint servers, newest first. We list the newest 120.
- Why the full names. “DMT” on its own also means disease-modifying therapy in multiple sclerosis, dance/movement therapy and the chemical dimethyl terephthalate, so the abbreviation alone never brings a paper in, and a record whose title or keywords are about multiple sclerosis or dance/movement therapy is left out. Psilocybin, psilocin and bufotenine have chemical names ending in “N,N-dimethyltryptamine”; those names are set aside so they don’t count as DMT.
- Papers about the compound, not mentions of it. A paper is kept when the compound is named in its title or keywords, or at least three times in its abstract. That leaves out the many papers that only list DMT or ayahuasca among other psychedelics. Corrections, errata and conference abstracts are left out too, and a preprint that was later published in a journal is shown once, as the journal version.
- Compound tags follow the same rule. An ayahuasca paper is tagged DMT as well only when DMT is in its title or keywords, not just because the brew contains it.
- Study-type tags are automatic and may be wrong. They come from Europe PMC’s publication types first, then words in the title, then medical subject headings, and the first match wins: Review (reviews, systematic reviews, meta-analyses); Randomised trial (indexed as a randomised controlled trial, or “randomised” or “placebo-controlled” in the title); Case report; Clinical study (other clinical trials and observational studies, or title words such as healthy volunteers, patients, open-label, phase 2, EEG or fMRI); Survey (survey, questionnaire, cross-sectional, interview or qualitative studies); Animal study (mice, rats, zebrafish and other animals in the title, or indexed as animal-only research); Cell/lab study (cells, chemistry, synthesis, genomes, analytical methods, computer models); and Other for commentaries, editorials, theory papers and anything the rules don’t place. Open the paper to see what it really did.
- Everything else is Europe PMC’s own record: the title exactly as published, the journal or preprint server, the date the record was first published, and the open-access flag (a paper not flagged may still be free to read on the publisher’s site; preprints usually are).
How to read a paper.
- Check what kind of study it is. A review sums up earlier work; a randomised, placebo-controlled trial in people is the strongest single design; open-label, animal and cell studies are early steps that often don’t carry over to people.
- Look at the size. Many DMT and ayahuasca studies have a few dozen participants or fewer. Small studies can find effects that larger ones don’t.
- Preprints are drafts. They haven’t been checked by other scientists yet, and their conclusions can change before, or without ever reaching, a journal.
- Read beyond the title and abstract. Titles are written to be noticed. The methods and limitations sections say what was actually done, and who funded it.
