“Wavy cap” is the common name iNaturalist gives for Psilocybe cyanescens (iNaturalist). The plural, wavy caps, is how the name usually appears. The scientific name behind it was published by E. M. Wakefield in 1946 and has a holotype and an epitype on record (Species Fungorum).
The name is easy to mix up with Panaeolus cyanescens, a species in another genus whose iNaturalist common name is “Blue Meanies” (iNaturalist). The shared epithet cyanescens, from the Latin for turning blue, does not make the two species related or their names synonyms.
Psilocybe cyanescens is well studied for a psilocybin species. It was one of three species whose genomes revealed the shared psilocybin gene cluster (Reynolds et al., 2018). A common name describes nothing reliably about what a mushroom is, and this entry gives no features for recognizing one.
