SSRIs and SNRIs are common antidepressants that raise serotonin signaling. A 2023 analysis of 611 reports from people taking an antidepressant found weaker psilocybin effects more likely with SSRIs and SNRIs (Gukasyan et al., 2023). In contrast, a 2022 trial in 23 healthy volunteers found that 14 days of escitalopram had no relevant effect on positive mood effects and lowered ratings of bad effects and anxiety (Becker et al., 2022).
On safety, a 2025 scoping review of 18 studies found no increased serotonin-syndrome risk, while noting that the evidence is largely case reports, surveys and open-label studies (Tap et al., 2025). In 443 Reddit posts about the combination, 8% described negative effects (Sakai et al., 2024).
Stopping a medicine carries its own risks. Health Canada says not to stop or reduce an antidepressant on your own and to talk to a health care provider. This entry describes research only and is not medical advice.
