GLOSSARY · SAFETY

9-8-8 Suicide Crisis Helpline

Also called: 9-8-8, 988

Canada’s national suicide crisis line, reached by calling or texting 9-8-8 at any hour, every day of the year. It offers crisis support and is not an emergency dispatch service.

The 9-8-8 Suicide Crisis Helpline offers support by calling or texting 9-8-8, 24 hours a day, every day of the year (988.ca, checked 26 October 2026). The Government of Canada’s mental health page lists it for thoughts of suicide and lists 9-1-1 for immediate danger or urgent medical needs (Government of Canada).

It is crisis support, not an ambulance: the 988.ca site says to call 9-1-1 right away if your safety is at risk (988.ca). In January 2026 the Government of Canada announced renewed support for the line and described it as open to anyone in a suicide crisis or worried about someone close to them, in English and French (Public Health Agency of Canada).

The line appears on safety pages about psychedelics because CAMH notes that some people feel depressed or anxious long after hallucinogen use (CAMH). For a possible poisoning the matching service is a poison centre, and for someone unconscious, not breathing or having a seizure it is 911 (CAPCCT).

General information, not medical advice. In an emergency in Canada, call 911. For a mental-health crisis, call or text 9-8-8.
