MycoBank is an online database where mycologists register new fungal names and their descriptions. The naming code’s fungus chapter lets the Nomenclature Committee for Fungi appoint “recognized repositories” (Madrid Code, Art. F.5.1). The committee appointed Fungal Names, Index Fungorum and MycoBank, a decision ratified by the International Mycological Congress in 2017 (Madrid Code, Art. F.5.1, examples).
Registration became compulsory for fungi. To be validly published, a new fungal name published on or after 1 January 2013 must cite in its protologue the identifier a recognized repository issued for it (Art. F.5.2).
Taxonomy reviews cite MycoBank alongside Index Fungorum when they judge which names are current. A 2023 Panaeolus review, for example, cites both in saying Copelandia is not a currently valid genus (Strauss et al., 2023). The databases can differ, so a careful source names the one it used. A registry entry records a name; it does not identify any mushroom.
