Australia’s Poisons Standard (October 2026 instrument, registered 30 September 2026) lists psilocybine in Schedule 8, controlled drugs, only “in preparations for human therapeutic use for the treatment of treatment-resistant depression”. Outside that entry it sits in Schedule 9, prohibited substances (Poisons Standard, October 2026).
Appendix D of the same instrument says psilocybine in preparations for human use may be supplied only for treatment-resistant depression, and only if prescribed by, or supplied with the authority of, a medical practitioner registered as a specialist psychiatrist for whom an authority under subsection 19(5) of the Therapeutic Goods Act covering psilocybine is in force, or for use in an approved or notified clinical trial (Poisons Standard, October 2026). That subsection 19(5) authority is what people mean by authorised prescriber status.
The Standard names the compound, not mushrooms, and states and territories can implement it differently. We could not open the Therapeutic Goods Administration’s own pages, so this entry does not describe how many psychiatrists hold an authority or how the scheme works in practice. Canada has no equivalent prescriber category. Not legal or medical advice.
