Part 3 of Alberta’s Mental Health Services Protection Regulation (AR 114/2021) covers psychedelic drug treatment services. It defines “designated psychedelic drug” to include psilocin and psilocybin, among other substances (Alberta King’s Printer, AR 114/2021). Its sections carry the amendment note AR 202/2022, and the consolidation we opened was current as of 4 June 2026.
Section 34 says a service provider offering psychedelic drug treatment services requires a licence, and section 35 exempts, among others, approved clinical research trials run under research ethics board conditions without charging participants. Section 36 says no person may prescribe a designated psychedelic drug to treat a psychiatric disorder unless they are a psychiatrist trained as the Standards require, with limited room for other physicians working in consultation with a psychiatrist (Alberta King’s Printer, AR 114/2021).
These rules sit on top of federal law. A provincial licence does not authorize possession or supply of psilocybin; that still needs a federal route such as a clinical trial or the Special Access Program (Health Canada, magic mushrooms). Not legal or medical advice.
