Toronto

Psychedelic Toronto, on foot

Two self-guided walks and nine stops, from Yorkville’s coffee houses to St. Lawrence Hall. Here are six.

Stop 1 · 110–112 Yorkville Ave

The Penny Farthing

A coffee house from 1963. On 17 October 1969, Canada’s federal drug inquiry, the Le Dain Commission, held a public hearing in the club.

Stop 2 · 134 Yorkville Ave

The Riverboat

Neil Young, Joni Mitchell and Gordon Lightfoot played this basement club, open 1964 to 1978. A 1967 sit-in on the street ended with about 50 arrests.

Stop 4 · 341 Bloor St W

Rochdale College

In 1968 students moved into this tower: a free university with no curriculum, exams or degrees. Since 1979 it has been apartments for seniors and people with disabilities.

Stop 5 · 344 Bloor St W

The Addiction Research Foundation

Its LSD trial for alcoholism compared LSD, an active placebo and no drug. Abstinence improved in all three groups, with no significant difference.

Stop 6 · 1001 Queen St W

The Queen Street hospital

In 1998 it merged into CAMH. In 2019, CAMH became a Toronto site in an international psilocybin trial for treatment-resistant depression.

Stop 9 · 157 King St E

St. Lawrence Hall

The Le Dain Commission heard from Torontonians here in October 1969. Its 1973 report found psilocybin wasn’t yet on any Canadian drug schedule.
